Distractions and Multitasking

I sit here at my desk doing my pre-planned Sunday event of organizing my week ahead as well as itemizing/categorizing my to-do list. And yet even with the planned event of organization, I am distracted – “I’ll just check this email real quick” or “Perhaps I’ll just research this real quick”. And of course my Blackberry signals me of new items before my laptop tells me. And with each of these distractions, the time it takes to get back on task increases. Not to mention, that this is Sunday and I should be focusing on loved ones.

I was reminded of a somewhat recent National Public Radio interview entitled “Step Away from the Blackberry”. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=19191625

This is a interesting and thought provoking interview with Valerie Burton, the author of: “How Did I Get So Busy? The 28-day Plan to Free Your Time, Reclaim your Schedule and Reconnect with What Matters Most“.

Don’t get my wrong – some of these distractions I really enjoy but others… make me loose complete focus.

My goal this week, to filter distractions as they come and to be less reactionary to emails and text messages. And that next item… to order Ms. Burtons book.
